Dark clouds over Wymondham.

The dark storm clouds gathering over Wymondham as Diss set off for this local derby game were the least of Diss's worries. The big question was would we have enough players to field a side as the already large list of injured and unavailable players was growing by the minute.
As the heavens opened on arrival a quick head count and we had 16 but with a few key positions vacant so this meant some rejigging with several Diss players reverting back to "old" positions and a couple playing "new".

With the sun now shinning Wymondham won the toss and choose to play with the wind and down the considerable slope on pitch 2. This proved to be a clever ploy as Wymondham soon had Diss pinned in their own 22 but stolid defence from Diss held out for a full 10 minutes before the Wymondham no10 scored their first try. This passage of play carried on for the rest of the half with Diss bravely defending the try line and rarely breaking out of there own 22. It was not until the last move of the half that Wymondham managed to create an over lap to put their winger in for a popular score in the corner. Score Wymondham 12-0 Diss.

The second half kicked off with Wymondham in determined mood to score another quick try and put the game beyond Diss's reach, and they came close to achieving this but again the Diss defence held out and it was now their turn to use the wind and slope to their advantage. The Diss first try came from a clever quick line out and Oscar Seaman powered his way through a flat footed Wymondham defence to score. This score lifted Diss spirits and it was not long before Tony Brown found some space to out sprint Wymondham for Diss's second try, the conversion went over so scores now tied 12-12. At this point the game could have gone either way but it was Diss in the ascendancy and the ever battling Seaman scored his second try, closely followed by Adam Whayman scoring a forwards try, driving in from close range. Score now Wymondham 12-22 Diss. Diss nearly scored again if not for some last ditch covering tackles on Tony Brown.
Sadly Diss where now starting to tire and Wymondham capitalised on this by bringing on some fresh legs from the reserves and after working their way up the slope to score their third try. Diss rallied yet again and kept Wymondham at bay and praying for the end of the game but with only seconds left on the clock Wymondham managed to breach the Diss defence to score under the posts. Scores now tied at 22 all but still with a conversion attempt. It was with an audible sigh (relief from Wymondham and disappointment from Diss) that the kick went over for Wymondham to win by the narrowest of margins in this highly entertaining and enjoyable match.
The Diss players should be proud with the whole team taking responsibility for their own roles and many players yet again stepping up to the mark and putting in personal best performances.
Special mention to Freddie,Tom W and Joe B who although injured at the moment still travelled to the game to support their team.
Diss man of the match was Alex Leader who played his normal game even though it was obviously to all his leg was giving him discomfort from the start.
