Remembrance Sunday began with the traditional 2 minutes silence. This was observed by the club members, and all visitors on this sombre November morning as show of respect, to the fallen of previous generations.

Diss, as the top club, by a considerable margin, in Norfolk, lined up against a formidable opposition that they last played in a full match, at the fabled Nottingham tour as the under 11’s in 2009. On that occasion Spalding ran out the comfortable victors, however around half of the Diss team who played in that game were present and seeking revenge.

Diss started with their usual lethargy and were soon under the cosh from this very capable and lively (and large!) team. They scored first, then us, then them again and then us (well you get the picture) and in the end it came down to 27-32 in favour of the visitors.

Spalding were very aggressive at the breakdown and competed for every ball. Their large packs were extremely streetwise and allowed to get away with many plays that Diss were pinged for!

Until Harvey Baker went over after a well worked move at the death, Ginger Ninja Joe Hegarty was the only Diss try scorer running in four times. It must be said however, none of these were his usual individual shows of brilliance- all were at the end of good team work.

This match could have gone either way but Spalding were perhaps good enough to win on the day, and deserved their victory. After the last time this was a considerable improvement from Diss!

Men of the Match for Diss were Luke Miller, for his fantastic defence and inspirational captain Angus McDaniel.

Many thanks are due to the stalwarts who ran the fund raising Cake Stall / Hog Roast stands in an effort to raise finance for next year’s tour to Holland. As a show of thanks, a Taxi was called for the referee but he missed that as well.
