Wymondham : Diss - 8th January 2017

In perfect conditions Diss RFC Under 14's had a nearly full squad of 21 players to take on their bogey team of recent years, Wymondham.

An early handling error by Wymondham prevented a near certain try but from the ensuing scrum against the head, simple passing along the line allowed their winger to score in the corner (0-5). From the kick-off Wymondham immediately regained possession and a miss-move saw their full-back enter at pace and race to the corner for their second try (0-10). At this point Diss woke up and played solid, controlled rugby, retaining possession and forcing penalties. This culminated in Harry Williamson emerging from the back of a rolling maul to force over in the corner. Aaron Frith's difficult conversion narrowly missed (5-10). The game was evenly contested but just before half-time a lost ball in midfield and some missed tackles led to a third Wymondham try in the corner (HT 5-15).

In the second half the game was reasonably well contested but Wymondham always had the cutting edge. Frustratingly, each of their tries was avoidable. A Diss line-out was palmed back, leading to a lost ball and simple handling along the back line, resulting in a try in the corner (5-20). Another Diss line-out was poorly managed, leading to a further lost ball. Although Wymondham were initially held up they could not be prevented from scoring from the resulting 5m scrum (5-27). The final Wymondham try came from another Diss line-out! Again some poor decisions and loose tackling saw the ball lost and Wymondham’s inside centre weave his way through to score (5-34). Diss did have moments in the second half; they were held up over the try line and only some magnificent Wymondham defence prevented Harvey Newton from scoring. However, on the day Diss were definitely second best and even their three cheers at the end were decidedly weary. Full time 5-34.
