A win secured in the last minute

After the success demonstrated last Sunday at the Norfolk RFU 10’s, Diss U14’s appeared to start this game thinking it was going to be an easy morning against West Norfolk RFC. This view was probably enhanced when in the first minute Diss gained possession inside their own 22 and fed the ball to Joe Jermy. Joe set off towards the try line and was only stopped just short of the line, if the Diss support had kept with him then we would have had the perfect start. This close call spurred on West Norfolk who took control of the first half from that point. At half time West led 14 – 0 having scored two well-constructed and supported tries.
The Diss side made a few changes at the break and with a more determined effort Diss started to claw their way back into the game. Finlay Martin scored the first with a determined strong run which has become his trade mark. Converted by Ben Waters.
Diss still lacked the drive in the scrum, rucks and mauls which had previously been an area of strength for them, so the second try took an excellent individual effort by Freddie Potter to score. The conversion was missed.
With less than two minutes to go, the score at 14 – 12 and West Norfolk camped in the Diss 22 it wasn’t looking good. Diss defended their line extremely well and then managed to work a break away. The ball was passed quickly through the centres and when further ball was secured at the breakdown, Ben Waters ran from the ½ way line with the West Norfolk defence trailing behind him he scored the deciding try. Ben converted his own try to leave the final score at West Norfolk 14 – Diss 19.
