Workmanlike performance

Diss Under 14’s maintained their excellent winning sequence with a solid and workmanlike performance against a determined and skilful Colchester side. How encouraging it was to see Diss start the game on the front foot this week. With only 4 minutes played Stanley Spurdens raced clear from half way to score a superb individual try close to the corner flag. Ben Waters stepped up to send the conversion sailing through the posts from way out on the touch line. Diss immediately attacked from the restart with Freddie Potter and Ben Faulkner to the fore. The f Diss forwards found some momentum and released fast ball that sent Ben Faulkner scampering over to increase the Diss lead to fourteen following yet another fine conversion from Ben Waters. At this point Colchester rallied and following poor Diss tackling scored two unanswered tries to bring themselves back into the game. One of the key features so far this season has proved to be the resilience of the Diss Under 14’s. Responding to Colchester’s revival, Tom Parks was sent on his way from well within his own half. Utilising rapid speed and intelligent running lines Tom scored a superb individual try to give the home side a nine point advantage at half time.
Colchester began the second half on the front foot. Diss were put under pressure within their own half and had to defend with determination and bravery. With thirty five minutes played, a superb pick up from Lucus allowed him to break through and score wide out on the left hand touchline. Diss now unfortunately succumbed to a passage of play where a lack of discipline at the tackle situation allowed Colchester to stay in touch. This at times has certainly proved to be an area where the Under 14’s do need to take heed of the advice given to them by those officiating. With five minutes remaining Ben Waters scythed through a tiring Colchester defence to seal an excellent victory. Ben was also nominated as the ‘Bartrums’ Man of the Match.
