Newmarket 12 V 22 Diss

Diss arrived at Newmarket heavily depleted in numbers by injury, ill health and skiing. This resulted in several players having to step up in unfamiliar positions but the casual observer would never have known. As with all the games this season the coaches again asked the team to start with the intensity level at high. This proved successful and within minutes Ben Waters broke through to score his first try. Newmarket realising they had a game on their hands fought back and their mercurial 10 demonstrated his pace and with ball quickly through their backs Newmarket equaled the score.
Diss forwards, led by Freddie Potter, fought hard in every breakdown winning most of the encounters. As they gained more ball and were able to release the backs, Ben Waters set off on another powerful run and scored his second. Shortly after this score Diss forwards secured ball from a scrum and the ball passed quickly out to Finlay Martin on the wing. Finlay in full flight is unstoppable and he ran from the Diss half and placed the ball between the posts. The forwards continued the pressure with outstanding performances from Bryce Cochrane, Will Wilcox, Ollie Davies and Adam Balding. The pressure they exerted meant that Freddie Potter was able to drive his way through the Newmarket defence to score. At half time Diss led 5-22
The second half needed a strong defence by Diss to prevent a resurgent Newmarket and this was almost achieved with them only able to get one try.
This was another fantastic performance by the U14's. Elliot Fulcher should be commended for his play in several positions and on loan to Newmarket. However the Bartrums man of match is awarded to Freddie Potter for leading the pack with such distinction.
