Hard day - but good lessons to take us forward

Sunday's match vs Ipswich A was a tough one for the U14's, but they will take away some more lessons for their development.

The team were outclassed and outplayed by a very well drilled and organised Ipswich A team who were at full strength, and looking to prove something following a defeat last week. The match was originally arranged against the Ipswich B team and we travelled to Ipswich on this basis with a significant number of players missing. While a full complement would not have changed the match outcome it would have been somewhat closer, as would prior knowledge of the challenge in front of us.

As evidenced by the scoreline, the traffic was one way with very good rucking and passing by the Ipswich team. One hopes the boys spotted their rucking success was a function of lower body positions that allowed them to drive under the Diss ruck defence. Secondly, the fact that Ipswich like many other teams make sure they are quickly on their feet to steal the ball on the ground in the ruck. Either the boys need to secure better rucks or get on their feet quicker....ideally both.

Another feature was the great setting of back lines, fast line defence and speedy simple passing the Ipswich team put together. Therefore, despite strong Diss tackling (there was a good amount of this) the ball was moved across the Ipswich line to the next person so keeping forward momentum. Also, the Ipswich team moved as one, backing each other up to make themselves available for the pass by being just behind the runner. Above all these points the simplest point was that no one the Ipswich team tried to beat the Diss team all by themselves. Instead they looked for the offload - either in contact or in open play. I hope the Diss boys saw this and bring it into training and play.

With one eye on next week's Cup match it was an opportunity to try out some new combinations which will help us. Mentions should go to the whole team for sticking in there - as commented on by the Ipswich coaches. Also, great work and intensity by Peace Joshua, fine strength and territory gain by Ryan Anozia, and man of the match Tom Vettarino for his work over the pitch and being one of the few Diss players to recognise the value of diving on the loose ball - simple but we would value more doing this. Finally it was very pleaseing to see the team working on their defensive line speed and setting the attacking line - much more talking and it is coming slowly. 'Keep the faith' in this and the results will come.

Next week's match is the big one - away to North Walsham in the Cup. Much to work on in training so looking for a really good turnout for those who are available for Sunday. Thanks to all the parents and supporters for getting to Ipswich.
