'The longest day'

Diss U13’s arrived at Holt on a glorious morning keen to put on a good show for the Mums who had made the trip on their special day. Holt were short of players and so Diss leant them their subs to ensure a 13 aside game.
From the start the Diss forwards were looking to utilise the skills passed on by club stalwarts Wigby and OX . The pack secured the ball by driving back Holt at the ruck and the backs quickly realised their first opportunity was on. Joe Jermy broke through the Holt line and couldn’t be stopped. Diss 1 Holt 0
Shortly afterwards the pack won the ball at the breakdown again and a short pass was popped to Dylan Smith who finished with an impressive sprint. Diss 2 Holt 0
At the restart Holt kicked over the heads of Diss who were too flat, gathered the ball and scored. Diss 2 Holt 1
In repeat of the last try Holt kicked through again gathered and scored. Diss 2 Holt 2
Holt now gained another player and so Stan Spurdens returned to the Diss side just in time to pick up from the base of a ruck and run through the Holt defence to score. Diss 3 Holt 3
Holt then took the lead for the first time and only time in the game. Diss 3 Holt 4
One of the most impressive elements of the Diss play was the support given to runners and the vision to pass at the most opportune moment. This was epitomised when Henry Robinson set off on a long run with Miles Clark constantly at his shoulder. Henry slipped the ball to Miles who scored a fabulous try. Diss 4 Holt 4
The game now settled into a short period where neither side could secure an advantage. Diss backs then called a move from a scrum which resulted in the ball moving quickly along the line to Reece Daniels who scored in the corner. Diss 5 Holt 4
This time it was Henry Robinson who was in close support of backs as they went forward and when given the ball he scored. Diss 6 Holt 4
Diss were dictating the play and the support was paying dividends. A series of interplay between several players saw Stan Spurdens gather the ball at pace and scoring – a team try.
Diss 7 Holt 4 Half time
The coaches had praised the support play and demanded more in the second half. The next try was another great example of this with Miles Clark at scrum half passing to Stan Spurdens and onto Joe Jermy. All three then went forward as one, passing back and forth between each other, as they came into contact or were tackled until Stan made it to the line. Such was the desire to look for the support again that for the last few metres Stan appeared to be crabbing sideways. Diss 8 Holt 4
Holt then scored. Diss 8 Holt 5
Diss knew what was working for them and at every opportunity they went forward the support was there. Next Joe Jermy made a good run and passed to the supporting Henry Robinson to score.
Diss 9 Holt 5
Isaac Powell was having another great game with his tenacity to want to win the ball and go forward it was proving very successful. For the tenth Diss try Isaac picked up and charged through Holt scoring a brilliant forward try. Diss 10 Holt 5
Unfortunately Diss allowed their defence to slip which Holt took full advantage of and scored 4 tries in quick succession. Diss 10 Holt 9
Diss weren’t finished though and with the game in what should have been the closing minutes Stanley Spurdens scored again to make it Diss 11 Holt 9.
That should have been it – time was up and although the game had been a great spectacle for the supporters of both sides it carried on and on. Eventually Holt managed the two tries required for a draw and the referee signalled the end.
Diss 11 Holt 11
A great display from all the team with many outstanding performances which everyone can be pleased with. Of note were the individual efforts of Miles Clark, Jamie Wilks, Henry Robinson and Stanley Spurdens. Of even more note was the collective efforts of all with the best team display of the season.
