A glorious day saw 6 teams in each pool for the pool stages.

Diss 0 Bury 10

Diss lived to regret this encounter by starting with their usually lethargic start and letting the game go beyond them in the first half. This was a team which should have been beaten but despite dominating the second half, the decisive scoring opportunities did not come. Freddie Palmer had to leave the pitch around the second minute with a hand injury and was to be the first in a series of unfortunate injuries.
Diss 10 Woodbridge 0

The boys enjoyed a pep talk from the coaches after the first match and took to the pitch against Woodbridge with renewed resolve. Woodbridge have proved to be difficult opponents in the past but were out-played on this occasion by a very determined Diss team, who did what was required from the off. Joe Hegarty scored 2 superb try’s, one a solo run through 5 players and the other a solid team effort.

Diss 10 Sudbury 5

Now into the groove Diss started badly, however, and were a try down just after kick-off. Captain Angus McDaniel rallied the troops however and Hegarty was put over shortly after making it 5-5 at half time. The second half proved to be very competitive, with Diss shading it after a further Hegarty try.

Diss 0 Old Northamptonians 25

Diss had observed this team in action before at the Northampton Festival but were not cowed by their size. Three of the opposition were over 5 feet 10 inches tall and the Inside Centre was 6 foot 1 and almost 14 stones in weight!
Diss were doing well to be only 1 score down just before half time, but 2 try’s were run in at the end of the half. The second half became a damage limitation exercise and 2 further scores were conceded but not without an extremely brave display by Diss boys.

Diss 15 Colchester 5

Last match of this Tournament and Diss were playing for pride. Colchester were a well organised and well drilled team but an early try by Joseph Boom and a further brace by the ever present Hegarty meant that Diss went out on a roll. This was a very good team display and augers well for the future. Almost the proper game on a full size pitch-bring it on.

A pretty good day all in all, Injury’s to Freddie Palmer, Alex Leeder, Rory Carter, John Joe Smith and Elliot Ghali did not help consistency, however the remaining players stepped up brilliantly, aided by their hobbling brethren and 2 players really made their presence felt during all these fantastic efforts: Joe Boom and Matt White.
