NORWICH FESTIVAL

DISS U11 WINNERS OF PLATE FINAL

Firstly a big pat on the back to the coaches, players and parents for turning out in such large numbers; Diss were the only club to enter two teams, which is a fine reflection on their inclusive policy.

Diss A’s opening match was against the hosts, Norwich. In the first half a strong run by Toby led to a try in the corner by Sam (Southwold ‘ringer’ - don’t tell anyone!). Some magnificent defensive work by Nathan behind his own line (play of the day for me) maintained the lead and a long solo run and try by Harry secured a 2-0 victory.

Against West Norfolk, Diss started slowly and conceded an early try. However, they fought back strongly and a Harry break led to a sprint down the line and try for Liam (Skipper for the day). Toby ran the length of the pitch for a fine solo try and good work in the maul saw Jack forcing over for a score that doubled their half time lead. A closer second half saw a break by Nathan converted by Harry for the game’s final score (4-1).

The last group game pitted the boys against the strong Wendons Sambo team. A closely fought first half ended pointless but Wendons, with the slope and wind at their backs, proved too strong in the second half and deservedly ended up 2-0 victors (they went on to defeat Southwold 4-1 in the final).

Facing Swaffham in the plate final Diss got off to a dream start; Aaron’s kick-off was collected by Liam, who burst over in the corner for the games opening try after only 12 seconds. A good run by Lewis led to a try by Will Gadd and Harry ran the length of the pitch to make it 3-0 at half time. In a closer second half Diss remained the stronger team but failed to add to their score. It’s good to come to the end of the season with some ‘silverware,’ even if it was in two pieces (broken!).

There were many fine performances and the disappointing display last week at Southwold was quickly erased. However, for his terrific work rate, fine skills and massive contributions at crucial moments, Nathan was chosen as player of the day.

Diss B’s lost their opening match against Southwold 11-0 but showed great spirit in their second match against Swaffham. Matthew and Lewis both score fine tries although they ended up being defeated 6-2. There were several fine performances but, for his excellent ball skills and tenacity, Matthew was chosen as the B team player of the day.
