End of season success for the Diss Under 10's!

The under 10’s arrived at the Norwich festival with sufficient numbers to field two teams. Diss ‘blues’ had a tough start against West Norfolk who would eventually go on to win all their pool games and make the final. After heavy defeats to West Norfolk and Norwich the ‘blues’ went into their final match against Southwold with a renewed determination. New girl Tia was growing in confidence and made several good runs ably supported by Megan who was impressive again in both defence and attack. Arthur and Elliot remained determined and assisted Finlay to a very good try. This was a good team effort by all concerned and it was great to see Jacob and Kieran getting stuck in and enjoying the games. Whilst the ‘blues’ were unsuccessful they all stayed to see their friends in Diss ‘Blacks’ team.
Lakenham Hewitt were the first opposition in the pool for Diss ‘Blacks’ who got off to a slow start. To the supporters the first half was concerning as Diss just didn’t seem to be linking well and we were hesitant at the break down. After Sion delivered an inspirational half time team talk the second half was an impressive display of running rugby. Diss triumphed by 5 tries to 0. Joe scored twice with Owen, Miles and Ben adding the others.
This was a small pool group so a win against Swaffham and Diss would be through to the final. From the start a very determined Diss side worked a move where the ball moved quickly through the hands and out to Joe. Joe ran through the opposition virtually unchallenged to score. Unfortunately from the restart we allowed Swaffham to do exactly the same and they scored without any real attempt to tackle. The remainder of the game was well controlled by Diss and whilst Swaffham did get one more try Diss won 7 tries to 2. The try scorers were Owen, Henry, Ben x2 and Joe x3. But most pleasing was the tremendous team effort.
West Norfolk awaited Diss in the final and the Diss support was boosted by the parents and players from the blues team. This was a very tight game with very little quarter being given by either team. Every attack by West was met with very determined Diss defence. When the opportunity arose to work the ball out wide Diss didn’t always see the chance but when they did the ball passed through several hands and allowed Joe to finish the move with a try. Minutes later we repeated the move and on this occasion Owen set off on a mesmerising solo effort to cross the line for what should have been a very well deserved try only for the referee to spot the ball hadn’t been grounded correctly. This made for a last few tense minutes with the play ebbing back and forth.
At the final whistle the jubilant Diss team were ecstatic and were joined on the pitch by the blues to form one Diss under 10 picture line up. A very fitting and well deserved end to the season during which every players contribution has resulted in this victory.
The Diss under 10’s are the Norwich RFC festival winners and North Walsham Festival runners up.
Many thanks to all the players, coaches and parents.
