The experience gained for this young Diss side will prove vital as the season develops

Playing against a professional side was always going to prove demanding for this young but ultimately courageous Diss side. A side containing no less than seven eighteen year olds or younger gave the League leaders their toughest game so far this season. A view expressed by Rochford coach, Michael Guess.
Rochford were able initially to exert intense pressure at the scrummage and breakdown. Rochford hooker, Tom Corbet had a wonderful game scoring three outstanding tries, all from well within his own half. Having conceded early in the half Diss battered the Rochford line with the likes of Matt Richards, Jake Girdler, Matt Warren and Ally Brooks all going close. Handling errors at crucial moments released the Diss pressure and opened up the midfield through which Rochford capitalised. At no stage throughout the game did Rochford spend any time in the Diss twenty two for any sustained period. Diss defended superbly all afternoon, time and again halting the home side’s attacks at source. Younger players such as Cutu Serruys and Eddie Bullock were inspired by the example being set by Connor McBryde and Tom Miller in the Diss midfield. The return of George Gooderham to the side proved inspirational. Gooderham tested the Rochford defensive structures from the outset and was instrumental in setting up Man of the match, Nick Garnham for a well worked forwards try just prior to the half term whistle.
Rochford scored points at regular intervals in the second half as the game broke up and more space became available. The young half back pairing of Will Tomson and George Jones stood up well to the driving onslaught of the Rochford backrow. Diss never relented in their efforts to remain in the game with Chris Beaird at the forefront of both defensive and attacking strategy. The homes side’s ability to move ball with width proved the decisive element to the game. The experience gained for this young Diss side will prove vital as the season develops, especially when one considers that Diss have now played all the top four sides in the League.
