After winning the toss Diss elected to receive and allow Watton to choose ends.

They instinctively decided to play down hill endeavouring to breach the visitor’s defence as early as possible. From the kick off Diss powered their way into the home sides half as if they were on the down slope and it wasn’t long before Blind side flanker Andrew Horne put the first points on the board with an outstretched arm to clear the whitewash and two red and black shirts hanging off him. Fly half Matt Trede converted. Soon it was 12 points to the good with winger Dougie Moir going over out on the right unconverted. Diss went 17-0 up after loose head Martin Sands touched down by looping round and creating an over lap on the right appearing on the outside centre’s shoulder. Watton rallied and for twenty minutes there was no score as the home side slowed the ball down cleverly stopping quick play with good work from their number nine and “work” on the floor by veteran and Watton coach Tim “angel face” Shaw. Before forty minutes were up, outside centre James Nichols strode through the middle of the Watton defence on an angle under the posts converted by Trede. Ted wishard then went over for his first senior try in the right hand corner.

It was the second half that was expected with Diss seemingly running in tries at will. Trede got the first two tries converting one of them. Sands got his second, right wing Tom Miller got one out wide. Wishard almost had a second but due to the early onset of his arthritis he fumbled the ball when touching down and knocked on. Matt Bailey stormed through the centres to go over unconverted. Hooker Oli Taylor scored under the sticks after an offload from Sands following a mesmerizingly weaving run by Trede who also converted. Tom Pritchard, who again had a barnstorming performance came off with an injury, so a reshuffle saw Seb Goodge return to the pitch at 10 after a couple of weeks with hamstring injury. He was fit enough to convert Trede’s third try. Moir went in for his second after another Watton player was smashed to the ground by Sands. The last score was a pick up by number eight Luke Bailey from the base of the scrum fighting his way through on the left, unconverted. Watton kept battling as well as they could and should take note of their signature tunnelling off song “always look on the bright side of life” as they will win matches in this league and look a tidier outfit than in recent times. They just came up against a Saracens team on the climb.
