On Monday Diss had the pleasure to take the Saracens team to Cambridge University to play their second team in a friendly organised between the two clubs and had the bigger pleasure of playing at Grange Road. Diss travelled with a strong group of players players and were happy to oblige Cambridge Rugby Club who added three players to the squad a week before the fixture which added to the occasion. The game began at a frantic pace led by the students of Cambridge and they got an early try when the ball got sent out wide. Diss go into the game and spent a period of twenty minutes on top with barraging runs made by Andrew Horne and the retuning Chris Howard. Good back play by the Ben Penfold playing ten for Diss kept Cambridge well in their half and Diss began to look likely to score. Unfortunately again the ball broke loose and the students gain managed to score out wide. More attacking play by Diss with the Hooker borrowed from Cambridge RFC leading the way well supported by Jo Kindly Sides and got Diss into a promising position and Diss managed to score when the fly half broke through. After the kick off Diss got themselves into trouble on their five metre line and the referee decided to award a penalty try when the maul got collapsed. Diss continued to make breaks with James Hayhoe barging around in the centre and Chris Trede managing to find space out wide getting some ball to Steve Macqueen and Liam Brown at full back. The students kept on attacking out wide and scored one more try before the interval again when a Diss knock on lead to another score. Half time the score was 23-5. Changes were made to the personnel with Nick Garnham coming on for Andy Mcallister, Matt Trede coming on for James Hayhoe, Freddie Cornish making way at prop, Tiger Shaw come off for Jay Sides, Pete Chartier came on at ten and Warren Wilby replaced Fred Precious. Diss started the half on the front foot and through good scrimmaging by Dave Rackham and more good lineout work Diss managed to score a pushover try scored by another player borrowed from Cambridge RFC. Cambridge came back at Diss and again through a Diss mistake again managed to score out wide just when Diss managed to get themselves in good positions to score. Benny Goodman got himself on the pitch at this stage as he couldn’t watch anymore as Liam Brown made way. Diss continued to dominate at the lineouts and scrums but were always chasing the students out wide and Cambridge ended the game with two late tries to give the score an uneven look but this didn’t affect the enjoyable evening that took place. Well done to all that travelled in the squad who made themselves available.
