Fakenham 1st XV 11: 3 Diss 2XV

Last week saw the Saracens travel to Fakenham, to play in the mid-table clash. A few last minute dropouts ringing the changes in the Diss side. The Saracens kicked off and soon re-gained possession, looking strong in both attack and defence. After around 10 minutes the Saracens conceded a penalty within kicking distance of the posts, which the Fakenham fly half made short work of to take the lead. The diss side however appeared to be more in control with the majority of the possession. After around 20 minutes Diss were awarded a penalty after a very high tackle left full back Stefan Coombes with a split lip, which fly half Adam Goymour stepped up to convert into three points. Shortly before half-time a series of driving mauls saw the Saracens tantalisingly close to the line, but a wet ball resulted in a knock-on. The Saracens maintained possession for the majority of remaining play, and the scores were tied 3-3 at the half time whistle.
With captain Ben Walker Injured, Will Hemmant was skippering the side, and the Saracens came out from the break positive after his feedback. The Diss side attacked hard from the outset and after a series of interchanges between backs and forwards alike saw the visiting side with a two man overlap, but a challenging pass and the wet conditions saw centre Tom Miller knock on trying to catch the ball. Within 5 minutes the Diss side were camped back on the Fakenham line, but the home side's defence remained strong and managed to turn over the ball. They kicked to clear the line, and the speed of the Fakenham winger proved just too much for the Diss backs, as he ran through, scooped up the ball and scored in the corner. The conversion was missed giving Fakenham an 8-3 lead. The Saracens came back strong and again squandered a try scoring opportunity owing to handling errors. This started to raise tempers in the Saracens camp, resulting in an infringement at the ruck giving home team a penalty in front of the posts which was kicked, extending the lead to 11-3. The Saracens responded well to this and attacked hard, maintaining the majority of possession, but the wet conditions frustratingly prevented the diss team capitalising on two further try scoring opportunities. The close of the game gave the home side the victory, and left the Saracens frustrated, but positive after one of their most convincing performances to date.
