After finally being allowed to play in the Eastern Counties leagues it was a determined Saracens team that took the pitch ready to make a good impression in their first game. With a number of new combinations the first half was scrappy with a determined Norwich Union team disrupting the breakdown to good effect. This season’s New Zealand import Dougal Polson burst through to score from long range and Petey Chartier put his extra bulk to good use to barge over for the second try while the returning Will Edwards crossed for the third with Alan Goymour managing to convert all three for a 21-3 half time lead.
The second half was much improved with the free flowing Saracens style to the fore with Goymour scoring two more, Chartier a second and the try of the day set up by impact player Seb Goodge for the impressive Polson to score his second, with Goymour converting three of them. Norwich Union managed a consolation try after intercepting a speculative Chartier pass but new Saracens skipper Ben Walker was pleased with the team’s performance.
