Saracens 68-0 Watton 1st XV

The Saracens looked strong from the kick off on Saturday at Mackenders, and Henry Passmore crashed over the line in the first 5 minutes for the first of 12 tries for the afternoon. Throughout the first half the home side looked dominant, with the forwards clearly winning the battle up front and the backs putting together some classy moves to run rings round their Watton counterparts. Both scrums and line outs were won against the head, with both Diss jumpers; Henry Passmore and Jacob Page competing well in the air. The Diss team were really starting to show their potential, working well as a unit, this being their seventh game together for the season. By 20 minutes in Watton were starting to feel the pressure and the try count continued to tick along, with Andrew Horne, Karlton Gray, James Gowing and Ray Knapp all crossing the line by half time. Pete Chartier, returning for his second game of the season, converted four of the six first half tries from drop kicks, leaving the Saracens 38-0 ahead at the break. Wattons frustration was evident and this came to a pinnacle shortly before the end of the half when the Watton 6 decided to bite Passmores forearm in an attempt to get to the ball in a maul.
From the restart it was evident that Diss weren’t going to let off, and the catch was taken cleanly, and carried, once again, deep into the Watton half. A well timed catch at the line out inside the 22 followed by a powerful driving maul by the forwards put Jacob Page over for another try, unfortunately not converted by Chartier. Again from the restart the backs looked strong, and centre Jake Girdler ran a powerful cutting line off flyhalf Will Edwards to break through the Watton defence on their 10 metre line and wriggle past the full back to score under the posts. Watton then found some form and sent a strong challenge down the far wing with a series of moves between the wing and full back, but were stopped by the Saracens clinical defence. A bit of kicking tennis ensued, until it was ended by Diss full back Pete Chartier catching it and calling the mark. Then in a move earning him the wooden spoon for the game, Richie Horne called for the pass out wide, and, thinking it was a 22 drop out, went to tap the ball forwards and managed to knock it on! However, following another strong scrum by the boys in blue, possession was regained and the attack was soon back in the Watton half. There were further tries from Andrew Horne, Karlton Gray, James Gowing and the final score came from Henry Passmore to Complete his Hat trick for the game. Unfortunately Chartier failed to convert any of the second half tries, leaving the score at the final whistle 68-0. Watton fought hard for the full 80 minutes, but just couldn’t compete with the dynamic Diss outfit.
