Saturday afternoon saw Norwich travel to Mackenders with just 14 men, so Tom Miller from the Saracens bench went and started for the visiting side. The boys in blue kicked off and soon gained possession, and following a series of interchanges Henry Passmore went over the line to score Diss’ first try within 3 minutes. With usual kickers Will Edwards and Aled Goymour away, Chris Trede stepped up to take the conversion, but narrowly missed wide of the posts. The Diss team carried on with the same momentum for the whole of the first half, with great phases of running rugby involving all 15 men. Norwich struggled with some of the impacts made by the enthusiastic home side, and lost their number 8 to a neck injury. Frazer Baron donned a blue shirt for the first time in 12 months, as he was back from America for Christmas, and duly ran in 3 tries from the wing in a performance earning him man of the match. Further tries came from Karlton Gray, Chris Trede, Jacob Page, Kyle Velardo and Adam Williamson. But the stand in Kickers all struggled with the strong wind, and by half time the Saracens had scored 10 tries but unfortunately only converted one of them, leaving the score at 52-0 at half time. There was however one opportunity missed when centre Kyle Velardo dropped the ball over the line, earning him the wooden spoon award!
The second half saw a series of changes, with Tom Miller coming back to the Diss side and Chris Trede volunteering to go and play for Norwich in the true spirit of the game. Further tries came from Will Baldwin, Stefan Coombes and Tom Miller, with Passmore finishing with 4. Frazer Baron converted one of the tries in the second half, and Stefan Coombes had a couple of attempts which resembled football goals rather than conversions! The Norwich side were flagging by 20 minutes into the second half, and the captain asked to end the game early, so at 65 minutes full time was called and the Saracens finished with a 79-0 victory, following an entertaining afternoon for the Mackenders Christmas lunch crowd.
