Diss began their season in good order taking on local Suffolk rivals Bury 4ths and coming away with a resounding victory.

Diss began well putting on early pressure on the Bury pack and after good work by the forwards Steve Macqueen found space out wide to accelerate and score. Bury got into the game and made a few moves of their own but struggled against a 3rd team pack that had trained together for the previous few weeks. Again Steve Macqueen found space after his opposite man missed a tackle and he again accelerated through to score. The game was played in twenty minute intervals and the first quarter ended with Diss winning 12-0. Ben Fidler came off injured and was replaced by the evergreen Owen Atkinson.

Diss began the second quarter as before and were close to scoring by the new look Benny Goodman almost setting up Ben Brooks out wide and Jay Sides going close also. Diss carried on attacking as the scrum was solid with Charlie Oakes and David Rackham and Baz Teare all putting a shift in in the front row. Diss had to score again and they did through good play by James Hayhoe and he set up Warwick Bowen to score out wide. Bury managed to score eventually mid-way through the second quarter by good work by their forwards and their centre went through under the posts. Diss returned back with a quick try of their own to finish the half after Jo Sides picked the ball up in his own half and ran half the pitch to be stopped close to the line but this didn’t stop Ben Brooks picking up the pass and scoring out wide. Diss scored close afterwards when Jay Sides collected good ball won by Jack Owen and Mike Jones and went through a gap to score.

The third quarter Bury attacked hard and picked themselves up from the first half performance and got into the game straight away. Good work from two lineouts and a Diss penalty led to them scoring in front of the posts. The third quarter was scrappy and Diss managed to score another try through more good forward work this time by George Spinks who replaced Jack Owen and from close range Will Appleton scored. Diss added a penalty soon after to give them a big gap in the scoring.

As the sun carried on shining the final quarter was scrappy but Diss carried on attacking, Fergus Newman went close from full-back and Mike Jones went close from the number eight position. Gareth Watts continued good work from second row after not playing for 5 years and Diss managed to score another penalty in the final quarter to give Diss a convincing win against a good solid Bury side.
