Diss thirds continued their top of the league dominance with a fine away victory in appalling playing conditions at one of the leagues bottom sides. The conditions levelled the game out as Diss couldn’t play their expansive game but still Diss played to the conditions. With Jack Owen returning to the back row after his parliamentary farming commitments and Ethan Page returning from his two week sabbatical Diss always had enough to give them victory. Ryan Shannon who like so many hookers is really a back row player filled in and did a fine job in running at the opposition and almost scored early on but got tackled on the try line. By tem minutes into the game veteran Warwick Bowen had been replaced in the centre by Jay Point Break Sides and he gave the side some central running and went close to scoring himself. Eventually, even though Swaffham battled hard, Diss got on the scoresheet through some good play by the back being marshalled by Mike Jones and Ed Curtis at prop went over for a pushover try. Diss continued to attack and managed to score again out wide after a Ben Brooks run out wide put them in a position for Ethan Page to score. Diss were playing the muddy conditions well now and after several players went close Jo Sides went over after Steffen Coombs crashed the ball up at fly-half. Various play went on during the half with Nick Yager under heavy head strapping was a thorn in the side of Swaffham from second row and Gareth Watts was destroying the lineout by winning or disrupting most of Swaffham’s lineout. At half time it was 15-0 to Diss. Swaffham regrouped at half time and attacked Diss and from the half way line a miss tackle in the centre let them in to score. At this stage the back row enforcer Fred Precious had seen enough and opted to get himself on the pitch and play wing, from this point on the game changed. Apart from a few attacks that Swaffham had that got stopped in the centre by Skipper Benny Goodman all the play was Diss’s. Precious almost scored twice in five minutes and was involved in the build up to a Jay Sides try out wide that gave Diss a bonus point. Diss continued and after good work by Fergus Newman who drew a player in from full back Diss were in a position to score under the posts and after Steffen Coombs went close , Benny Goodman set Jo Sides up to score close to the posts. More tries followed , Andy Macalister went through from close range and in the final minutes Owen Atkinson went over when a pushover try was scored. Diss finished with a healthy points win and look forward to the top of the table clash against Norwich Union at home next weekend before player enjoy their Christmas break.
