Diss 3rds started their season with an seven-try 45-0 beating of Lakenham Hewitt at the Mackenders Ground on Saturday. It was all smiles among the players and Captain / coach Benny Goodman as the 3rds wrapped the try bonus point before half-time. A Cayley try was followed by others from Ben Brooks, another Cayley try, Adam Williamson, Karlton Gray, Naz Girgin and new player from last year colts, Jordan Dunning. Scrum Half Naz Girgin added 10 points from the tee , including five conversions in a near-impeccable all-round performance. Cayley powerfully went over from his inside the opposition 22 to open the scoring followed by Brooks powerful carrying with a gift-wrapped try opportunity. With the home side's scrum dominant and Girgin touch-finders inch-perfect, another try around the half-hour swung matters even more decisively. First Will Edwards fielded a ball on his own 22 and, rather than kicking it back, set off on another run. His chip and chase seemed inconclusive as the ball bounced awkwardly between competing players before Cayley picked up and went over the try line. Half time came and changes to the pack and back line were made.
The irrepressible Nick Yager now partnering his familiar second row associate Gareth Watts was starting to impose himself on proceedings, stealing lineout and taking the ball from the kick offs and setting up play. There was no let-up after the break as tighthead Karlton Gray finished off a bullocking run by Adam Williamson, and Jordan Dunning then forced his way over in the corner for try number six. One more score got added before the finish after Adam Williamson finished off a neat try by going under the posts to give a comprehensive win for the 3rds. Sterner tests will come later in the season but as a first game it was necessary to get the cobwebs blown away and as Captain Benny Goodman explained to his players in the post match interviews further harder fixtures await for the 3rds around the corner.
