Team Wyatt fightback to secure a draw

Team Wyatt travelled to Ipswich for an unscheduled game with high hopes of continuing their good form. Ipswich under 13 are a good side who had recently won all their games in the Suffolk festival and had conceded no tries in doing so. Diss started poorly and their handling at times was woeful this boosted the Ipswich confidence who could clearly sense that they were building towards the first try. Good passing and support saw the ball out to the Ipswich wing who went over in the corner. Diss were yet to settle to the task in hand and from another Ipswich attack close to the line the Ipswich winger received the ball with only a few metres to cover for a second. The remainder of the half was closely fought and the score remained 2-0 at half time.
The coaches were quick to demand a greater effort and for the forwards to start dominating in the loose. However, with these plans set within a few minutes of the start of the second half the Ipswich backs ran through our line unchallenged and scored an impressive try.
This third Ipswich try seemed to be the catalyst for a massive Diss fightback. With play getting bogged down on the left wing Isaac Powell ripped the ball out of breakdown and fed the backs. Joe Jermy grabbed the opportunity to run a tight angle defeating the Ipswich defence and getting the first Diss try.
Very shortly afterwards Ipswich were back on the attack and when only 5 metres out Finlay Martin won the ball from his own tackle and set off on the longest of runs leaving the Ipswich defence trailing in his wake. A truly excellent try.
Ipswich weren’t finished and although most of the attack play was coming from Diss they had left the back door open and so when Ipswich secured ball from open play they ran through a weak defence and scored their fourth.
Diss were now rampant and determined to make amends for poor defence. The pace and intensity of the play on both sides was impressive. A 5m Scrum awarded to Diss was quickly recognised as the opportunity they had been building towards. The play rehearsed at training was called and worked well with Joe Jermy taking the ball at pace in the centres to go over for his second.
All the play was now with Diss and they had made camp in the Ipswich 22, trying to work another chance. An Ipswich forward trundled forward only to be met by a Josh Hayhoe tackle who fought the ball off the attacker and popped up to the ever keen Isaac Powell for the equalising try.
The draw was a fair result from a very enjoyable game to spectate, but Diss Wyatt knew that this was a game they could have won if they had started better.
